The official educational system in Uruguay offers Secular, Free and Compulsory Education.
Since 1877, this has applied to Primary School Education, its compulsory nature being extended to Secondary Education later on. University education is also freely available.
Private institutions are allowed to offer religious education to their students.
One of the country’s main educational achievements is the high literacy rate – 96.2% of the population older than 10 years old.
